Hawaiian Goose – (Nēnē)

This elegant bird, the Nēnē, lives on all of the Hawaiian islands. This gourd was done in the traditional pawehe style and measures approximately 8” x 9”. It rests in a handmade circle of dried haole koa leaves, which is a common weed found all over the islands.

The indigenous Hawaiian goose, Nēnē, so named for its soft call, became the state bird of Hawai’i in 1957. They are mentioned in the Kumulipo (the Hawaiian creation chant) as being the guardian spirit of the land. They are symbolically seen as a joining force between mountains and the coast because of their seasonal movements. They are a distant cousin of the Canadian goose, although smaller and with distinct markings. They seem to love the golf courses in my area!

When I first looked critically at my finished ipu,  I was a little bit unsatisfied that the dye did not seem to “take” evenly on the back until I stepped back and saw the “clouds” behind the flying geese. I love it when nature takes over!
