Description
Ipu is the Hawaiian word for gourd. Ipu Pawehe is a uniquely Hawaiian style of decorated gourds sometimes called the Ni’ihau method, as some scholars believe it originated there. Simply stated, a design of choice is “etched” into the very topmost layer of the epidermis after which the gourd is filled with a natural dye. As the dye leeches out it stains only the area where the green skin was left intact.
